Book it in late winter or early spring – September is ideal – and the unit goes into swim season clean, gas-checked and proven, before the October – November rush books out everyone’s calendar. Leave it unserviced and the spring warm-up drags out for days longer than it should, at full power draw the entire time.
The service itself: we clean the evaporator coil and straighten clogged fins where a year of leaves and Manawatū dust has settled, check the refrigerant pressures for leaks, inspect the heat exchanger, verify the water flow and flow switch, test the thermostat and temperature sensors against real readings, tighten and test the electrical connections and contactor, clear the condensate path, and finish with a heating performance test – measuring the temperature lift across the unit so you know it’s actually delivering.

The cheap wins first: keep a cover on – an uncovered pool sheds most of its heat to evaporation, and no heat pump outruns that; hold a steady temperature instead of letting the water go cold and re-heating from scratch; and keep the space around the unit clear so it can breathe – hedges, pot plants and stacked pool toys all choke the airflow the coil depends on.
Then the one people miss: water chemistry. Unbalanced water is what kills pool heat pumps – corrosive water eats at the heat exchanger, scale coats it until the heat can’t get through, and manufacturers can decline warranty claims where chemistry has been left to drift. We inspect the exchanger at every service, so drift gets caught while it’s still an adjustment rather than a replacement part.
And the easiest saving of all: bundle it. We’re often servicing home heat pumps in the same suburb, so book the pool unit and the house unit as one visit – one callout, both machines cleaned, checked and documented, and both ready for the season ahead of them.

Brief frosting in cold shoulder-season weather is normal – the unit defrosts itself and carries on. Ice that builds and never clears points to an airflow or refrigerant fault, and running it that way punishes the compressor. Repeated breaker tripping is an electrical fault – often weathered outdoor connections or a failing component drawing too much current – and it’s exactly why our repair visits include a registered electrician’s eyes, not just a refrigeration check.
Yes – spa and swim-spa heat pumps get the same service: coil clean, gas check, flow and sensor tests, electrical check and a performance test. Spas work their heaters hard because the target temperature is higher, so a neglected spa unit shows up as slow heat-up times and a power bill that doesn’t match the use. Either works – done properly.
