Ducted Heat Pump Specialists

Palmerston North's Ducted Heat Pump Design & Installation Team

A ducted heat pump heats and cools your whole home from one indoor unit hidden in the ceiling space, delivering quiet, even air through discreet vents in every room. It’s the closest thing to central heating New Zealand homes get – and it’s designed and installed here by a dedicated team of qualified electricians and air conditioning specialists, backed by Budget Electrical.

We design and install Daikin high static ducted systems from 6.0 kW to 12.5 kW, with optional 4-zone control, wall controller and phone app – for new builds and existing homes across Palmerston North, Feilding, Ashhurst and the wider Manawatū. Prefer wall units or a multi-split instead? We do those too, and we’ll tell you honestly which suits your home.

From the room-by-room heat load design through supply, installation, electrical certification, commissioning and the servicing that follows, one local team manages the whole job. No subcontractor handovers. No guesswork on capacity. No orphaned warranty if something ever needs attention.

Specialist Ducted System Design

A ducted system is only as good as its design. We calculate the heat load room by room, size the ducting to deliver that heat quietly, and balance the airflow at commissioning - so the back bedrooms end up as warm as the lounge without the system working overtime. The goal is simple: the whole house at 21°, a power bill that doesn't frighten you, and a warranty that stays intact.

No undersized units. No noisy vents. No cold rooms at the end of the run.

Ducted Systems: Whole-Home Comfort

Whole-Home Heating & Cooling From One Hidden System

The whole house at an even 21° - no wall units, no cold hallways, no fighting over the one warm room

,The indoor unit sits out of sight in your ceiling space, the outdoor unit lives outside like any heat pump, and insulated ducting carries conditioned, filtered air to low-profile vents in every room. One wall controller – and your phone, runs the entire house.

The difference is how it feels. Hallways, bathrooms and bedrooms hold the same temperature as the living room, so there’s no bracing yourself for the cold end of the house on a July morning. And because the unit lives in the ceiling, it’s the quietest way to heat a home – no wall units humming in bedrooms, nothing interrupting the look of a new build or a renovated villa.

Come February, the same system runs in reverse as whole-home ducted air conditioning – cooling and dehumidifying every room through those same vents while the humidity sits over the Manawatū.

Sizing is everything. Our 6.0 kW system suits most single-level three-bedroom homes; larger and two-storey homes step up to 12.5 kW. We confirm it properly with a room-by-room heat load calculation at the free assessment – never off floor area alone.

Ducted Systems: Zone Control

Zone Control: Heat the Rooms You're Using

Bedrooms on their own schedule, living areas on theirs - full comfort where you need it, real savings where you don't

Zone control divides your home into areas, typically living zones and bedroom zones – using motorised dampers inside the ductwork. On our 12.5 kW Daikin system, 4-zone control is a $1,500 option, and it changes how the system earns its keep.

Instead of heating empty bedrooms all day, the living zone runs while the family’s up, then warmth shifts to the bedrooms before sleep – each zone on its own schedule from the wall controller or the app. You’re heating maybe half the house at any moment, and the running costs follow.

Our honest take: compact single-level homes often don’t need zoning – the system holds the whole house comfortably anyway, and we’ll tell you to keep the $1,500. Larger homes, long floor plans and two-storey layouts are a different story: zoning almost always pays for itself there.

Ducted Systems: New Builds & Retrofits

New Builds, Renovations & Existing Homes

Best planned at the framing stage - but most existing single-level Palmerston North homes can retrofit in one to two days

Building new? Get us in while the plans are still soft. We design the duct layout with your architect’s drawings, pre-wire with Budget Electrical before the linings go on, and place vents where furniture won’t fight them. The result is a system that looks like it was always meant to be there – because it was.

Retrofitting an existing home comes down to a few practical checks: ceiling cavity height and access, where the indoor unit can sit, insulation condition and the duct routes to each room. Most single-level Palmerston North homes with accessible ceiling space qualify, and a typical retrofit is finished in one to two days – vents cut clean, ceilings tidy, house warm that evening.

And when ducted genuinely isn’t the right answer – a low-pitch roof with no cavity, or a budget that two high wall units would serve better – we’ll say so and quote the alternative instead. We’d rather install the right system than the biggest one.

Why Choose Us

Three commitments
behind every system.

A ducted system is the biggest heating decision you’ll make for your home – and the hardest to fix if it’s designed wrong. An undersized unit runs flat-out and still leaves the far rooms cold. Lazy duct design means noisy vents and uneven temperatures. And an uncertified electrical connection puts the whole warranty at risk.

Our ducted heat pump service is built around three commitments.

Registered ElectriciansQualified AC InstallersBacked by Budget Electrical5-Year Product & Install Warranty
01

Designed room by room.

Every system starts with a heat load calculation for each room – size, insulation, glazing, orientation – not a guess off the floor plan. Duct sizes, vent positions and return-air placement are engineered from that, so every room gets its share of the warmth.

It’s the difference you notice at 6am in July: back bedrooms holding temperature on a -2° morning, without the system roaring to keep up. Design is where ducted jobs are won or lost, and it’s the part cheap quotes skip.

02

Qualified in both trades.

A ducted install is refrigeration work and electrical work in one job, and our team is qualified for both. Installation by qualified installers, the dedicated circuit wired and certified by our own registered electricians, Certificate of Compliance issued on every job.

One team accountable for the whole system, no coordinating a separate sparkie, no grey areas on responsibility. We recommend asking any ducted installer to show the same before you sign.

03

Commissioned, balanced and backed.

No handover until the system is proven: vacuum and pressure tested, refrigerant charge verified, then the airflow balanced room by room so every vent delivers what the design says it should. You feel the result, and we record it.

Every Daikin ducted system carries a 5-year product and installation warranty, registered for you – and because we’re also the local team that services it, we install like we’ll be seeing it again.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ducted Heat Pumps

01

How much does a ducted heat pump cost in Palmerston North?

Our installed prices start at $6,500 including GST for a 6.0 kW Daikin high static system – the right size for most single-level three-bedroom homes – and $9,500 for the 12.5 kW system that suits large family homes, with 4-zone control available for $1,500 more. Those figures include the unit, design, installation, wall controller, electrical certification and GST.

Two-storey homes and complex retrofits are quoted after a free in-home assessment, so the price you approve is complete. See the current ducted specials above for exact models.

02

Is a ducted heat pump better than several high wall units?

It depends what you’re solving. If you mainly live in one or two rooms, a couple of high wall heat pumps cost less to buy and run. If you want the whole house evenly warm, quiet operation and nothing on the walls, ducted wins clearly – one system, one controller, every room covered. A multi-split sits in between. The free assessment prices your best option honestly, not just the biggest one.

03

Can a ducted system be retrofitted into my existing home?

Usually, yes. The practical requirements are accessible ceiling space for the indoor unit and duct runs, and a sensible route to each room. Most single-level Palmerston North homes qualify, and a typical retrofit takes one to two days. Where a roof design genuinely rules it out, we’ll tell you straight and quote the multi-split alternative instead.

04

How much does a ducted heat pump cost to run?

Less than most people expect, because heat pumps deliver several kilowatts of heat for each kilowatt of electricity they draw. Running costs depend on your home’s size and insulation, but heating the whole house with one right-sized ducted system is typically far cheaper than a collection of plug-in heaters – and zone control cuts it further by only heating the areas you’re using. Steady and low beats blasting it: set 20 – 21° and let it hold.

05

Are ducted heat pumps noisy?

Ducted is the quietest way to heat a home. The indoor unit lives in the ceiling space rather than on a bedroom wall, and when the ducts are sized correctly – which is a design job, not luck – the vents deliver air at a whisper. We also position the outdoor unit away from bedroom windows, yours and the neighbours’.

06

Does one system really heat and cool the whole house?

Yes. A ducted heat pump is a reverse-cycle system: warm, even heating through every vent in winter, and whole-home ducted air conditioning with dehumidifying through the same vents when Manawatū summer humidity arrives. One controller, one outdoor unit, every room – all year.

07

What size ducted heat pump do I need?

As a guide, 6.0 kW covers most single-level three-bedroom homes and 12.5 kW handles large or two-storey homes – but insulation, ceiling height and window area shift the answer, which is why every quote starts with a room-by-room heat load calculation rather than a floor-area guess.

08

Do you install ducted systems outside Palmerston North?

Yes: Feilding, Ashhurst, Levin, Marton and the wider Manawatū – same installed prices, and new-build design work can start from your plans wherever the site is.
