Palmerston North Heat Pumps was founded in 2026 by Jagdeep, a qualified electrician who went on to earn his air conditioning ticket as well. Years of installing for established firms showed him the same story on repeat: good units sold badly, sized by guesswork, wired by whoever was available, then forgotten the moment the invoice was paid.

All Makes & ModelsOur installed prices start at $1,750 including GST for a bedroom-sized high wall unit (back-to-back installation), $2,250 – $2,500 for larger living-area units, and $6,500 – $9,500 for whole-home ducted systems. The price moves if the install isn’t standard. Long pipe runs, two-storey homes or internal walls are quoted after a free site assessment. As a rough guide: 2.5 – 3.3 kW heats a standard bedroom, 5 – 6 kW a typical Palmerston North lounge, and 8 kW+ a large open-plan living area. But ceiling height, insulation, window area and which way the room faces all shift the answer, and Manawatū frosts punish an undersized unit. We do a proper heat-load check as part of every free quote, so you get the capacity your room needs rather than a guess.
There’s no single winner – there’s a right unit for your room and budget. Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric lead on quietness and cold-morning performance. Carrier offers outstanding value with a 10-year warranty while Panasonic and Fujitsu are dependable mid-range picks. What matters more than the badge is correct sizing and a quality installation – a well-installed mid-range unit will outperform a poorly installed premium one every winter.
Heat pumps are the cheapest form of electric heating in New Zealand. A typical 6 kW living-area unit draws around 1.5 kW of electricity to produce that heat, which works out to roughly 40 – 50 cents per hour at average power prices. Run it smart – steady temperature around 20 – 21°, doors closed, filters clean, and a whole winter of warmth usually costs less than people expect.
If you mainly live in one or two spaces, high wall units are the best value – one for the lounge, one for the main bedroom. If you want the whole house evenly warm with nothing on the walls, ducted is the answer, provided you have ceiling space. A multi-split (several indoor units running off one outdoor unit) sits in between. The free site assessment tells you which option gives you the most comfort per dollar for your actual home.
Partly. Heat pumps dry the air as they heat, and dry mode helps in shoulder seasons, but if your windows stream every winter morning, the real fix is a home ventilation system that continuously swaps damp indoor air for drier, filtered air. The two together are the healthiest (and cheapest-to-run) combination for a typical Palmerston North home.
Give the filters a quick clean every few months yourself, and book a professional service once a year, ideally before winter. An unserviced heat pump slowly loses efficiency, costs more to run, and can have warranty claims declined.
